Sibley, Iowa — A Milford man has been arrested on a felony burglary charge after an incident in Sibley.
According to a criminal complaint filed with the Osceola County Clerk of Court’s Office by the county sheriff’s office, 42-year-old Tony VandeBurg of Milford is accused of attempting to hide in a convenience store after hours. He was arrested on Saturday.
In his statement, the deputy says the manager of the Casey’s store in Sibley contacted law enforcement when they were going to close, and there was still someone in the bathroom. They tried knocking, to no avail, then opened the bathroom, and no one was in there. The deputy noticed there was dirt on the toilet seat and that a ceiling tile looked to have been moved. Some tiles were missing in the manager’s office, and the deputy was able to shine his flashlight above the false ceiling. He says he saw VandeBurg curled up against the back wall. They later found his backpack, and the deputy says it contained burglar’s tools.
VandeBurg was charged with second-degree burglary, a class C felony. If convicted, he could face up to ten years in prison. He also faces a misdemeanor count of possession of burglar’s tools.
VandeBurg faces a preliminary hearing on June 27th.
At last report, he remained in the Osceola County Jail in Sibley in lieu of a $10,000 bond.
