Carnes, Iowa — A Springfield, Minnesota man was taken to the hospital and then to jail after a rollover accident on Highway 60 on Tuesday.
According to the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office, about 4:25 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22, 61-year-old Richard Friessen was driving a 2018 Toyota Sienna minivan northbound on Highway 60 near Carnes, when he lost control of the vehicle, which entered the ditch, struck a field driveway embankment and rolled.
The Orange City Ambulance took Friessen to Orange City Area Health for treatment of minor injuries.
Upon further investigation, deputies suspected that Friessen was under the influence of drugs. So after Friessen was released from medical treatment, he was arrested and transported to the Sioux County Jail. Sioux County officials tell us that while entering the sheriff’s office, Friessen allegedly dropped a small bag of what was believed to have been methamphetamine.
Friessen was charged with second-offense operation of a motor vehicle while intoxicated, third offense possession of a controlled substance, and bringing a controlled substance into a correctional facility.
The sheriff’s office reports that the Orange City Police Department, Orange City Fire Department, and the Orange City Ambulance Team assisted them with the response to the incident. The sheriff’s office Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) also assisted in the investigation.
