Nine Fire Departments Fight Fire On Iowa Side Of Big Sioux Near Hudson

Hudson, SD, Iowa — Nine fire departments were called out to a fire on Monday, April 18, 2022, near Hudson, SD.

According to Hudson, SD Fire Chief Justin Teunissen, in the 3:00 p.m. hour, the Hudson, SD Fire Department was called to the report of a field fire near 1812 360th Street, on the Iowa side of the river, about a mile east of Hudson on B30.

The chief says the fire department saw a large grass fire as they approached the scene. In addition to the water sprayed by the firefighters, farmers with disks disked fire breaks.

Teunissen says no injuries were reported.

Firefighters from Hawarden, Rock Valley, Sioux Center, Ireton, Inwood, Hull, Alcester, and Fairview (SD) were also called to respond. Teunissen also wants to send out a big “thank you” to the farmers that quickly respond with their equipment when asked. He says it makes a big difference.

He says the Hudson department was called back later for a fire on a MidAmerican Electric pole near the scene of the first fire, so they did some investigating and believe the cause of the grass fire may have been sparks thrown from the electric pole.

Chief Teunissen reports that about 80 acres of stubble burned.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about three hours.

Teunissen reminds people that the conditions remain very dry and to exercise caution outdoors.
