No Rest For Sheldon Firefighters Saturday

Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon Fire Company was kept running Saturday, responding to five separate calls during the course of the day.

The day began early for Sheldon firefighters Saturday, with a 6:15 am page to assist SCAT and Sheldon Police Department. Firefighters were back at the station by 6:42 Saturday morrning.

Less than two hours later, at 8:36 Saturday morning, The Sheldon Fire Department was paged to a power line down and a grass fire at 3066 McKinley Avenue, which is approximately one and a half miles north of Sheldon on County Line Road. Assistant Fire Chief Randy Harms says MidAmerican Energy was called to deal with the power line, while firefighters extinguished the grass fire. He says firefighters were back at the station at 10:02 Saturday morning.

The Sheldon Fire Company pagers went off again at 10:50 Saturday morning, calling them to a lawn mower on fire on one of the ball diamonds at the Sheldon High School. Firefighters returned to the station from that call at 11:07 am.

After a nearly three hour break, at 2:06 Saturday afternoon, firefighters were again dispatched, this time to assist the Boyden Fire Department in battling a grove fire. Firefighters returned to the station from that call at about 2:29 pm.

The fifth call of the day found Sheldon firefighters assisting the Sheldon Community Ambulance Team with a call at 2:54 Saturday afternoon. Firefighters returned to the fire station at 3:15 pm.

Beginning at 5:00 Saturday afternoon, the Sheldon Fire Company hosted a benefit for Fire Chief Jerry Meyer, who is battling cancer. Assistant Fire Chief Randy Harms extended a thank-you to all those who helped, contributed to, or attended, the event, making it successful.
