Ocheyedan Man Could Face Over 25 Years If Convicted Of Sheldon Meth Possession

Sheldon, Iowa — An Ocheyedan man has been arrested on felony drug charges after a traffic stop in Sheldon.

According to a criminal complaint filed with the O’Brien County Clerk of Court’s Office by the Sheldon Police Department, 23-year-old Rian Engelkes of Ocheyedan is accused of possessing a large amount of methamphetamine. He was arrested on Sunday.

In his statement, the officer says Engelkes was a passenger inside a car that was part of a traffic stop. He says a bag of white crystalline substance was found between the center console and the passenger seat, where Engelkes was sitting. Engelkes admitted to being the owner of the crystalline substance. The officer says that the crystalline substance was tested and was positive for methamphetamine. Once the officer arrived at the jail, the bag with methamphetamine was weighed, and it weighed approximately 67.5 grams.

Engelkes was charged with a Controlled Substance Violation, in this case — a class B felony; possession of a controlled substance; and failure to affix a drug tax stamp, both class D felonies. If convicted of the class B felony count, he could face up to 25 years in prison. If convicted of the class D counts, he could face five years in prison on each charge.

He faces a preliminary hearing on July 3rd.

At last report, Engelkes remained in the O’Brien County Jail in Primghar in lieu of bond.
