Sanborn, Iowa — There were some tense moments in Sanborn on Thursday, April 13th.
According to O’Brien County Sheriff Bruce Devereaux, the call started out with a woman going to Sanborn Foods and reporting that two females were being held hostage by a man with a gun at a residence at 201 West Fifth Street in Sanborn.
Devereaux says the Sheriff’s Office High-Risk Entry and Arrest Team (HEAT) officer arrived on the scene and took the male in question into custody. However, the sheriff couldn’t confirm if a gun was found. On Friday afternoon, the Sanborn Police Department confirmed to KIWA that no gun was found, and no one had been held against their will.
Sheriff Devereaux tells us that the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Middle School in Sanborn was advised of the situation in case they wanted to go into lockdown, but Principal Matt Van Voorst tells us that when they got the call, the school day was already over, so there were no students at the school.
The Sanborn Police Department says they later found out that the woman who made the report had mental issues and had not taken her medication.
