One Injured In Crash Near Grand Falls Casino

Larchwood, Iowa — One person was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital following a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 9 and 100th Street, in front of Grand Falls Casino Tuesday.

According to a report from the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened when a 2009 Honda CRV, driven by 68-year-old Bernard VandeWeerd of Sibley, was southbound on Highway 9. 17-year-old Jonah Davis, of Larchwood, was eastbound on 100th Street in a 1990 Mercury Grand Marquis. Deputies say Davis failed to yield at the stop sign, colliding with the passenger’s side of the VandeWeerd vehicle.

A passenger in the VandeWeerd vehicle was reportedly transported to Sanford Sioux Falls with what deputies describe as “apparent minor injuries.”

Damage to VandeWeerd’s vehicle is estimated at $3,000, with estimated damage to Davis’ car at $750.

Authorities report that Davis was cited for Failure to Obey a Stop Sign, Improper Performance Ability of Motor Vehicle Brakes and Minor Using Tobacco.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Larchwood EMS, the Larchwood Fire Department, Lyon County Ambulance, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, and Erwin’s Service and Towing.
