Orange City Firefighters Respond To House Struck By Lightning

Orange City, Iowa — There were some anxious moments when the Orange City Fire Department was called out for a call early on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, in Orange City.

According to Orange City Fire Chief Dan Roghair, at about 12:30 a.m., the Orange City Fire Department was called to the report of smoke from a garage that had been struck by lightning due to storms in the area at 703 Juneau Avenue Southeast in Orange City.

The chief says they were able to determine that it had been a lightning strike, due to arcing on the metal gutters and seams and electrical issues in the house. He says they got out their thermal cameras and entered the garage attic and crawl spaces to make sure the lightning didn’t start anything smoldering.

Roghair says no injuries were reported.

The fire department was assisted by the Alton Fire Department and the Orange City Ambulance Squad.

Chief Roghair reports that the damage estimate is to be determined as there was definitely electrical damage and an electrician would have to give an estimate.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene until 2:00 a.m.
