Orange City Man Dies In Crash Following Police Pursuit

Sergeant Bluff, Iowa– An Orange City man has died as the result of a pursuit that ended in an accident in Sergeant Bluff on Friday, June 14, 2024.

The Iowa State Patrol reports that at about 3:00 a.m., 24-year-old Donovan Burrell of Orange City was driving a 2003 Oldsmobile southbound on Old Lakeport Road and Wilde Street, about a mile and a half east of the Sioux Gateway Airport. They tell us that a Woodbury County Sheriff deputy was attempting to catch up to the vehicle — which was driving above the posted speed limit — when the driver lost control and traveled southbound in the northbound lanes, went off the east shoulder, came back onto the roadway over both lanes of Old Lakeport, then onto the west shoulder and struck a shed. The trooper says excessive speed, alcohol and/or drugs, erratic driving, and not wearing a seatbelt were all contributing factors in the crash.

Sergeant Bluff Rescue took Burrell to UnityPoint Health- St. Luke’s Hospital, where he died.
