Paullina, Iowa — Paullina firefighters responded to a field fire on Wednesday.
Paullina Fire Chief Ryan Harper says they were dispatched at about 3:15 p.m. to 4862 Redwing Avenue for the report of a field fire. That’s about two miles south of Paullina.
When they got there, the chief says they found heavy smoke and approximately four acres of corn stalks already burned, with the fire still quickly burning towards the south. He says they started an attack on the fire to stop the spread to a bean field nearby.
Two local farmers with tractors and disks assisted by cutting fire lines. The Granville Fire Department was also paged to assist. Harper says firefighters were on scene for just over an hour and had approximately six acres burned.
Harper says the cause of the fire was unattended burning.
The chief says they’d also like to caution everyone against open burning due to the very dry conditions. He says even with the smallest amount of wind, fire can spread very quickly.
