Pedestrian Taken To Regional Hospital After Car Strikes Him In Orange City

Orange City, Iowa– A Rapid City, SD man was taken to the hospital after a car versus pedestrian accident in Orange City on Tuesday, November 7, 2023.

The Orange City Police Department reports that at about 7:30 a.m., 62-year-old Laura Lenz of Alton was driving a 2016 Buick eastbound on Highway 10 at Northwestern College. They tell us that 30-year-old Jay Determan of Rapid City, SD was northbound on foot between the Northwestern commuter parking lot and Van Persum Hall, approaching the first crosswalk west of the Conoco station.

The report says that Lenz told the officer she saw the crosswalk’s yellow flashing lights start flashing, and she started to slow down. But she said she did not see Determan in the cross walk and that he “just appeared”. Lenz says she thought he was standing by the curb when she struck him with her car.

The Orange City Ambulance took Determan to Orange City Health System Hospital. He was reportedly airlifted to a regional hospital.

Lenz’s Buick sustained $5000 in damages.

Lenz was charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian.
