Rock Rapids Man Faces Felony OWI Charge

Rock Rapids, Iowa — A Rock Rapids man has been arrested on a felony OWI charge after a traffic stop in that town.

According to a criminal complaint filed with the Lyon County Clerk of Court’s Office by the county sheriff’s office, 38-year-old Blaz Medal of Rock Rapids is accused of driving under the influence for the third or subsequent time. He was arrested last week.

In his statement, the deputy says Medal was driving while his license was revoked. He was cited on a charge of open container, and a search warrant was issued and a sample of his blood was collected and was sent to the DCI lab for testing. He says it came back with a blood-alcohol level of 0.269 percent. The legal limit for blood alcohol is 0.08 percent, so the sample was over three times the limit.

Medal was charged with operating while intoxicated, third or subsequent offense, a class D felony. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison. He also faces misdemeanor charges of driving while revoked and open container.

He faces a preliminary hearing on Monday, July 7th.

Medal was booked into the Lyon County Jail in Rock Rapids, and was released on Monday after posting bond.
