Rock Rapids Man Jailed For OWI, Felon In Possession Of Firearm

Rock Rapids, Iowa — A Rock Rapids man was taken to the Lyon County Jail early Sunday, after a routine traffic stop led to criminal charges.

According to court records, shortly before 2:45 Sunday morning (February 27th), A Lyon County deputy pulled over a car on South Union Street (Highway 75), for a registration violation.

The deputy says that car’s driver, 64-year-old Jerry Lynn Waagmeester of Rock Rapids, allegedly showed various signs of alcohol impairment and reportedly failed a series of field sobriety tests. A PBT (Portable Breath Test) also allegedly indicated that his blood alcohol content was above the legal limit.

Waagmeester was placed under arrest for 1st Offense OWI (Operating While Impaired), a Serious Misdemeanor.

In addition, according to court records, Waagmeester allegedly had an unloaded, uncased 12-gauge shotgun in plain view in the back seat of his car. According to authorities, he is prohibited from possessing a firearm by Iowa law, due to a 2013 Felony Domestic Abuse conviction in Union County, South Dakota. As a result, Waagmeester was charged with having Dominion or Control of a Firearm or Offensive Weapon by a Felon, which is a Class D Felony.

A Preliminary Hearing in the case has been set for 9:00 am on Wednesday, March 9th in Lyon County Magistrate Court.
