Rural Alton Fire Damages Building, Tires

Alton, Iowa — A lean-to building and some tires were damaged in a fire on Sunday, February 18, 2024, near Alton.

According to Alton Fire Chief Quintin Van Es, at about 5:20 p.m., the Alton Fire Department was called to the report of a possible barn fire at 5053 Kennedy Avenue, four and a half miles south of the east side of Alton, or about three miles east of Carnes.

The chief says when they got there the fire was moving toward a structure but actually started as an intentional debris pile fire that got out of control and spread to some tires, and that started a lean-to building that was once a hog confinement. He says the fire was quickly knocked down by firefighters, who extinguished the tires and cooled hot spots.

Van Es says no injuries were reported.

The fire department was assisted by the Orange City Fire Department as per their Auto Aid agreement.

Chief Van Es reports that there was minor damage.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about an hour.
