Rural Sheldon Hog Building Probably Totaled After Explosion

Sheldon, Iowa — A hog building was probably totaled in an explosion on Tuesday, May 20th, 2025, near Sheldon.

According to Sheldon Fire Chief Brad Hindt, at about 5:25 p.m., the Sheldon Fire Company was called to the report of a hog shed fire at 3667 Marsh Avenue, two and a half miles south and a mile west of Sheldon.

The chief says when they got there, they found the small hog nursery building with the roof caved in, but no fire. He says those on scene told him they had loaded out pigs earlier in the day, then power washed the facility, locked it up and left. Then later they were out working in the yard, and saw smoke from the building, so they called the fire department. He says they found that there had been an explosion of some kind in the building, as the walls were bowed out, and the roof was caved in.

Hindt says no injuries were reported, and the building was empty at the time.

He says there must have been some sort of propane or methane explosion, but no source of ignition could be found. He says it’s still under investigation.

Chief Hindt reports that the 30-by-60-foot building is probably totaled.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about an hour and were assisted by a Sioux County Deputy Sheriff.
