Sheldon, Iowa — Sheldon firefighters were called out to a fire call on Tuesday afternoon in which a kitchen was damaged after a stove accident.
According to Sheldon Fire Assistant Chief Brad Hindt, firefighters were called to 2737 Nettle Avenue, about five miles north of Sheldon’s east side.
The fire was on the stove. Hindt says the resident told him he was alerted by sounding smoke alarms. He knocked the fire down with a fire extinguisher, but it was still smoldering, and the house had a considerable amount of smoke in it.
When firefighters got there, they found the residents had exited the house. Firefighters removed the smoldering items from the stovetop, took them outside and completely extinguished them. Hindt tells us the range and the ceiling above the range were also removed. A positive pressure fan was used to remove the remaining smoke from the house.
He says the cause of the fire was considered accidental. A burner knob on the stove was accidentally bumped turning the burner on and igniting items that were on the stovetop. The fire caused considerable damage to the kitchen and smoke damage to the whole house.
The Sheldon Fire Company was back in service at 4:00 p.m.
