Shedon Firefighters Extinguish Tree Pile Fire Monday Evening

Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon Fire Company was called out to a fire on Monday, August 11, 2025, near Sheldon.

According to Sheldon Fire Chief Brad Hindt, at about 8:00 p.m., the Sheldon Fire Company was called to the report of a tree pile fire at 2881 McKinley Avenue, about three miles north of the west side of Sheldon.

The chief says the fire department saw the trees burning as they approached the scene. He says they put the pile out with water and a payloader helped to spread it out. He says that’s also how they discovered the cause. Hindt says the people there had a burn pile there about a month ago, and had covered it with dirt, but apparently it was still smoldering underground and that was enough to light the new pile on fire. Hindt says the tree pile was going to be burned eventually, but the occupants were concerned that the fire would get too close to a machine shed, so they called 911.

Hindt says no injuries were reported.

Chief Hindt reports that there was nothing of value damaged in the blaze.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about an hour and a half.
