Sheldon, Iowa — Sheldon emergency crews responded to the report of a single-vehicle accident at the north end of Sheldon on Northwest Boulevard (Old Highway 60) shortly after 3:30 Sunday afternoon.
According to a release from the Sheldon Fire Company, on arrival firefighters found a Ford Ranger pickup on fire in the west ditch, with grass in the ditch also having caught fire, with flames spreading to the north.
Fire officials say there was no accident, and for unknown reasons the pickup’s driver drove the vehicle into the ditch, igniting the fire. Fire officials say the blaze also damaged some of the railroad ties on the adjacent railroad tracks.
Officials say one Sheldon fire crew quickly attacked the pickup fire and another crew went to work extinguishing the grass fire, quickly knocking it down before it could get out of hand due to the strong winds and dry conditions.
Sheldon Fire was assisted by the Sheldon Police, Iowa State Patrol, Sheldon Community Ambulance Team and Sheldon EMA. Sheldon Fire was back in service at about 5:30 Sunday afternoon.
