Sheldon, Iowa — Sheldon’s Emergency Services Departments were called out to a report of a fire on a semi trailer carrying flammable fuel Monday evening south of Sheldon.
Sheldon Assistant Fire Chief Brad Hindt says Sheldon Emergency crews were paged out for a fuel tanker on fire near mile marker 28 on the Highway 60 expressway.
Hindt says the truck driver noticed his trailer wheels were on fire and took quick action, pulling over and hitting the flames with the two fire extinguishers that he had on his truck. Hindt says the action extinguished the fire, after which the truck’s driver unhooked the truck from the tanker, which was carrying about 1000 gallons of flammable fuel.
On arrival firefighters stopped the Southbound Highway 60 traffic until the scene was safe. Firefighters approached the tanker to look for any fire and then cooled the brakes of the trailer with about 500 gallons of water, according to Hindt.
Sheldon Fire was assisted by Sheldon Police Department, Sheldon Community Ambulance Team (SCAT), Sheldon Emergency Management Agency (EMA), Iowa State Patrol, along with O’Brien and Sioux Country Sheriffs Deputies.
Hindt says Sheldon firefighters were on scene for a little over one-and-one-half hours
