Sheldon Fire Company Responds To Fire Call At Kent Feeds

Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon Fire Company was called to Kent Feeds on Friday night.

Sheldon Fire Chief Brad Hindt says that at about 10:40 p.m., the Sheldon Fire Company was paged to 1500 RMT Avenue — Kent Feeds — for a report of fire. Hindt tells us the reporting party said they had a fire in cooler #7, but they believed they had gotten the fire out. They said a significant amount of smoke was still in the building.

Hindt says when they got there, firefighters found smoke in the production area of the plant and the cooler on the second floor hot and smoldering. Firefighters advanced a hose line in the building to the second floor. Once the hand line was charged, the firefighters opened the cooler door. As oxygen entered the cooler, the product started to burn inside the cooler. He says firefighters applied water inside the cooler to extinguish the fire and looked for any extension of fire. He says they found that the fire was contained inside the cooler. Employees began to empty the product and dumped it outside, where another crew of firefighters applied water to the product.

Hindt says the damage was confined to the pellet machine and product. The cause of the fire is undetermined.

He tells us the Sheldon Police Department assisted them, and firefighters were back in service at 1:00 a.m.
