Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon Fire Company had a busy day on Sunday, with no fewer than three calls, the most extensive of which was a call in which a house was damaged in Sheldon.
According to Sheldon Fire Assistant Chief Chuck Ball, a few minutes before 8:00 p.m., the Sheldon Fire Company was called to the report of a dishwasher fire at 1641 N 2nd Street in Sheldon.
The assistant chief says the fire department saw smoke from the roof, doors, and windows as they approached the scene. He says they used an aggressive interior attack to fight the fire.
Assistant Chief Ball says no injuries were reported.
He says the cause of the fire appeared to be a malfunction in the dishwasher.
Assistant Chief Ball reports that there was moderate damage to the kitchen, with smoke damage throughout the home.
He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about two hours.
Earlier that day, the fire calls started out with a car fire a few minutes before 11:00 a.m. at 8th Avenue at Park Street. Ball says it was caused by an engine backfire, and the fire had been mostly put out by the time they got there, so they just performed some overhaul. He says there was light damage to the vehicle, and they were on that scene for about 20 minutes.
The Sheldon Fire Company also responded to a grill fire on Sunday evening, a few minutes after 6:30. Ball says the call went out as a propane tank fire at 1119 South 8th Avenue. He says he thinks the fire started due to a leaking propane hose. He says the occupants pushed the burning grill off the deck to limit fire damage elsewhere, but in so doing, they received minor injuries. Ball says the firefighters put out the grill and were on scene for about a half an hour. He says damage was limited to the grill and some cosmetic damage on the deck.
