Sheldon, Iowa — Sheldon firefighters answered a pair of calls Thursday afternoon.
The first came shortly 4:00 pm, and was rather unusual in nature. Assistant Fire Chief Brad Hindt says the call was to the Sheldon Community Services Center, where someone was trapped in the elevator.
When firefighters arrived, Hindt says they found that the elevator door would only open part way. He says firefighters forced the door open far enough to allow the person to exit the elevator. Firefighters were on the scene for about 30-minutes.
The Sheldon Fire Department didn’t get much of a break after the first call. Hindt says they were paged out shortly after 5:15 Thursday afternoon to a report of a fire that was getting close to a machine shed on a farm about 4 miles northeast of Sheldon.
Hindt says when fire crews arrived on scene they found a rather large trash pile, a large pile of tires and wood on fire. Firefighters were on scene for nearly two hours battling the blaze with 4,000 gallons of water and 10 gallons of foam.
