Sheldon, Iowa — A garage and two vehicles were destroyed in a fire in Sheldon Thursday night, June 18th, 2026.

Fire Chief Brad Hindt says the fire call was paged out shortly before 7:30 p.m. The page was for a garage fire at 901 6th Street in Sheldon.

Coincidentally, the firefighters were gathered at the training center and had just started to do training when the call came in, says Hindt. He says that when they arrived at the fire scene, firefighters found heavy smoke and flames coming from the overhead door on the south side of the garage. A group of firefighters made an interior attack through the walk-in door, and a second group of firefighters cut and removed the overhead garage door to gain access to the interior of the garage. He says the fire and hotspots were quickly extinguished by the crews. Firefighters began to overhaul the garage and its contents, looking for hot spots.

Hindt says the fire appears to have started in the southwest corner of the garage, and after talking to the homeowner, Hindt says he believes the fire was accidental, but the fire is under investigation.

The garage had heavy damage to the interior, as did all of it contents, which included a 2021 Ford and 2017 Ford, which were totaled in the blaze. He says that most likely the fire scene will be a total loss.

The Sheldon Fire Company responded to the fire with 22 firefighters, and was assisted on scene by the Sheldon Police Department and SCAT.

Sheldon Fire was back in service at 9:15 p.m., after nearly two hours.
