Sheldon, Iowa — A Sheldon man faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, and two Sheldon police officers sustained minor injuries, after an alleged burglar was reportedly caught while in the act of burglarizing a Sheldon apartment late Friday night.
According to court records, the incident began when the resident of an apartment on Pine Street in Sheldon came upon a burglary in progress at a neighboring apartment. The neighbor reportedly attempted to apprehend the alleged burglar, who police identify as 32-year-old Jose Armando Ayala Lopez. Lopez reportedly also lives in the same complex. The neighbor attempted to restrain Lopez, and hold him for responding police.
A short time later a Sheldon police officer arrived, and along with the neighbor, tried to take Lopez into custody, according to authorities. A second officer soon arrived on the scene to assist in the apprehension. The officers were finally able to take Lopez into custody. Court records indicate the two officers each received minor injuries in the scuffle with the defendant, who reportedly was uninjured.
Lopez was taken to the O’Brien County Jail, where he was booked on charges of: 2nd Degree Burglary, a Class C Felony; Assault While Participating In A Felony, a Class D Felony; 2 counts of Interference with Official Acts with Bodily Injury, which are Serious Misdemeanors; and Assault Causing Bodily Injury, a Serious Misdemeanor.
Online court records indicate that a Preliminary Hearing on the charges will be held Tuesday, June 16th at 9:30 am in O’Brien County Magistrate Court.
