Sheldon, Iowa — A Sheldon woman has been arrested on felony neglect charges after a traffic stop in Sheldon.
According to a criminal complaint filed with the O’Brien County Clerk of Court’s Office by the Sheldon Police Department, 33-year-old Jami Van Muyden of Sheldon is accused of using marijuana in the presence of a dependent. She was arrested on Saturday.
In his statement, the officer says Van Muyden was stopped for an alleged equipment violation. The officer says he knew that her license was revoked. He says the odor of marijuana could be detected coming from her vehicle and he says she admitted to using marijuana earlier in the day. The officer says she allegedly failed field sobriety tests and he located drug paraphernalia in the vehicle. Plus, he says her mentally impaired juvenile daughter was in the vehicle.
Van Muyden was charged with neglect or abandonment of a dependent person, a class C felony. If convicted, Van Muyden could face up to ten years in prison.
She faces a preliminary hearing on the charges on October 28
She was booked into the O’Brien County Jail in Primghar and was released the next day after posting bond.
