Sibley, Iowa — Sibley Fire Department personnel were called on to rescue one of their own Monday night after a traffic crash north of Sibley.
When firefighters arrived at the accident scene at 140th Street and Highway 60, they discovered that one of the drivers involved in the crash was their Chief, Kenneth Huls.
The accident happened about 6:15 Monday evening. Huls says he was northbound on Highway 60, in a Ford van, approaching 140th Street when an unlit farm tractor, driven by Isaac Molendorp of Sibley was westbound on 140th Street, crossing Highway 60.
Huls told deputies that due to darkness and the lack of lights on the tractor, he couldn’t see the implement until it was crossing directly in front of his van. Huls said he swerved trying to avoid a collision, but was unable to do so, striking the tractor. After the initial impact, Huls says his van continued into the median, crossed over both southbound lanes of Highway 60 and entered the deep west ditch, coming to rest in a ripped corn field.
Despite the fact that Huls was pinned in his van and needed to be extricated, he says both he and Molendorp escaped serious injury in the crash.
Osceola County Deputies investigated the collision, and were assisted at the scene by the Sibley Fire Department and Sibley Ambulance.
