Sibley Firefighters Put Out Ditch Fire Near State Line

Northwest Iowa — Grass and ditch fires have been common in northwest Iowa for the past few days, due to dry conditions and wind. One of the recent fires was near Sibley.

Sibley Fire Chief Ken Huls says the Sibley firefighters were called out to a mile-long fire along Oriole Avenue between the Minnesota state line and 110th Street, about five miles north of Sibley on Monday in the 12:00 noon hour.

Huls says they responded with ten firefighters and five trucks. He says nothing of much value burned, and the fields adjacent to the ditch had already been disked, so the fire couldn’t gain much headway through the turned earth.

Sibley firefighters were busy with the fire for about two hours.

He says the person who called in the fire reported smoke blowing across Oriole Avenue, which was causing a serious traffic hazard.
