Sibley Firefighters Put Out Fire East Of Town

Sibley, Iowa — It could have been worse, according to the man in charge, but the Sibley Fire Department was called out on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, to the report of an electric pole on fire near Sibley.

According to Sibley Assistant Fire Chief Dan Bechler, at about 3:35 p.m., the Sibley Fire Department was called to the report of a pole on fire near 180th Street and Highway 59, five miles east of the south side of Sibley.

The assistant chief says the fire department saw some cornstalk stubble on fire as they approached the scene, but he says it was not actually the pole that was on fire. He says the farmer had the fire almost taken care of with his equipment by the time firefighters arrived, but firefighters did spray a little water on some stubble that was on fire and had blown into a ditch.

Assistant Chief Bechler says no injuries were reported.

He says the cause of the fire is undetermined, but he thought it might have been started by a lit cigarette that someone threw out of a vehicle.

Assistant Chief Bechler reports that there was minimal damage.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about ten minutes.
