Sioux Center Man Accused Of Physically Abusing Child

Sioux Center, Iowa — A Sioux Center man has been arrested on child endangerment and willful injury charges after an incident in December in Sioux Center.

According to a criminal complaint filed with the Sioux County Clerk of Court’s Office by the Sioux Center Police Department, 22-year-old Corbin Van Briesen of Sioux Center is accused of abusing a special needs child. He was arrested on Tuesday.

In his statement, the officer says Sioux Center Police officers were called to the Sioux Center Hospital to investigate a non-verbal autistic 4-year-old boy’s injuries. The officer says Van Briesen, who was watching the child that night, advised he was in the other room at his home when he thinks the child fell off a table. The officer says the child’s injuries were severe enough where he had to be transferred to a Sioux Falls hospital. A doctor with “Child’s Voice, the center for child evaluation” evaluated the child and advised the injuries are consistent with physical abuse, according to the officer’s statement.

Van Briesen was charged with child endangerment and willful injury, both class D felonies. If convicted, Van Briesen could face up to five years in prison on each count.

No court dates have yet been set in the case.

Van Briesen was booked into the Sioux County Jail in Orange City, and was released the same day after posting a $12,300 bond.
