Sioux Center, Iowa — A Sioux Center man faces one felony and two misdemeanor charges after an incident early Wednesday evening.
According to Sioux County authorities, their Communications Center received multiple 911 calls reporting that a vehicle was being driven in an unsafe manner on 400th Street, east of Sioux Center.
Deputies say they located the vehicle driven by 23-year-old Alfredo Martin-Martin seven miles east of Sioux Center. Martin-Martin allegedly drove the vehicle into the ditch and exited the vehicle holding a two-year old child.
Deputies say they suspected Martin-Martin was under the influence of alcohol. He initially attempted to use the child to delay the investigation, and refused to release the child, but deputies were able to safely remove the child from him, according to authorities
Martin-Martin was transported to the Sioux County Jail where he was charged with Neglect of a Dependent Person, a Class C Felony; 1st Offense Operating While Intoxicated, a Serious Misdemeanor; and Interference With Official Acts, also a Serious Misdemeanor.
Deputies say the child was taken into custody by the Iowa Department of Human Services and later released to the child’s mother.
The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Orange City Police Department and the Iowa Department of Human Services.
