Spirit Lake Man Faces Attempted Murder And Theft Charges

Montgomery, Iowa — A Spirit Lake man has been charged with attempted murder and first-degree theft in connection with an incident Sunday in Montgomery. Caleb Crosby was taken into custody Sunday evening following a search by authorities. He was reportedly apprehended in Osceola County.

According to a criminal complaint, the attempted murder charge stems from an incident alleged to have taken place around 5:18 pm Sunday at 1421 193rd Avenue near Montgomery. Our news partner, KUOO news, has learned it involved a shooting and that the victim was seriously injured.

Crosby was also charged with two counts of theft. He’s accused of taking a 2020 GMC Sierra pickup from the same address in Montgomery a little after 6:30 pm Sunday, as well as a 2016 Ford F-150 pickup from an address in Lake Park. Crosby is being held in the Dickinson County Jail.

Online court records show he has an extensive criminal history. Crosby was arrested as recently as April 21st of this year on charges of theft in the 2nd degree and operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent. He was also arrested in March of this year at the scene of a fire in Montgomery after he allegedly refused to follow orders of firefighters. Crosby was charged in that incident with possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, possession of alcohol under the legal age, carrying a dangerous weapon (brass knuckles) as an ineligible person, and interference with official acts.
