Standing Corn Burns In Fire Near Archer

Archer, Iowa — Some standing corn was destroyed in a fire on Thursday, October 9, 2025, near Archer.

According to Archer Fire Chief Brian Vollink, at about 3:10 p.m., the Archer Fire Department was called to the report of a field fire near 4070 Olive Avenue, three miles south, one west, and three-quarters south of Archer.

When they got there, the chief says the fire department saw the corn on fire. He says they used water and five farmers with disks assisted them by disking firebreaks.

Vollink says no injuries were reported.

The Primghar Fire Department provided mutual aid assistance.

He says the cause of the fire appeared to be a broken part on a combine.

Chief Vollink reports that roughly five acres of standing corn burned, along with 15-20 acres of stubble. At the average county yield of 212 bushels per acre and the cash price for new crop corn at about $3.80 per bushel, the damage would be around $4000.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about an hour and a half.
