UPDATED With Names: Teen Siblings Die In Plymouth County Crash

Hinton, Iowa — Two high school students from Hinton High School were killed during an early Tuesday morning vehicle accident located in rural Plymouth County.

According to a release from the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office, their communications center received a 911 call shortly after 8:00 Tuesday morning advising them of a two-vehicle crash on County Road K22, near the intersection of Granite Avenue in western Plymouth County.

Authorities say Sheriff’s deputies, Hinton Fire and Ambulance and the Iowa State Patrol responded to the scene. The report says there were two critical injuries to the driver and passenger of a 2010 Honda Civic, and no injuries to the driver of a 2012 Dodge Ram 2500.

Deputies say the Honda was northbound on K22 when it entered a curve in the road and began to slide. The pickup was southbound on K22 when the Honda reportedly entered its path and was struck on the passenger side. Deputies report the road conditions at the time of the crash were 100% ice.

The two injured were the 18-year-old driver, Ella E. Holtzen, and her 14-year-old passenger, Harrison (Beck) Holtzen, both of Sioux City. They were taken to Sioux City hospitals, where they were pronounced dead.

KLEM Radio in Le Mars reports that the pair were siblings, a senior girl and her freshman brother, who were on their way to school at Hinton at the time of the crash.

Authorities say the crash remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol and Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office.
