Three People Taken To Hospitals After Million Dollar Corner Crash

Maurice, Iowa– A Hull man, a Le Mars man, and an Alton man were taken to area hospitals after an accident near Maurice on Thursday, October 9, 2025.

The Iowa State Patrol reports that at about 8:15 a.m., 22-year-old Dylan De Wit of Hull was driving a 2025 Peterbilt semi northbound on Highway 75 at the Million Dollar Corner– two miles north of Maurice. They tell us that 24-year-old Brayden Utesch-Nemmers of Le Mars was southbound on 75 in a 2022 GMC pickup pulling a trailer. The trooper says 43-year-old Kevin Weldon of Alton was driving a 2017 Chevy pickup pulling a trailer westbound on Highway 10; and that 42-year-old Diego Lopez-Maltos of Sioux City was westbound on Highway 10 in the turn lane for northbound Highway 75 in a 2021 Ram pickup. Both Weldon and Lopez-Maltos were stopped at their stop signs.

The report says that Utesch-Nemmers made a left turn towards Orange City in front of De Wit. De Wit struck Utesch-Nemmers, with the force of the impact causing De Wit’s semi to strike the Weldon vehicle. Weldon’s vehicle then struck the Lopez-Maltos vehicle. De Wit’s semi came to rest north of the intersection on its right side, blocking the northbound lane. Utesch-Nemmers’ pickup and trailer came to rest facing north in the center turn lane of Highway 75. Weldon’s pickup and trailer came to rest in the westbound lane of Highway 10. Lopez-Maltos’ pickup remained in its turn lane on Highway 10.

The Sioux Center Ambulance took De Wit and Utesch-Nemmers to Sioux Center Health Hospital. The Orange City Ambulance took Weldon to Orange City Health System Hospital. Lopez-Maltos reported no injuries.

De Wit’s Peterbilt sustained $100,000 in damages, and Utesch-Nemmers’s vehicle sustained $50,000 in damages. Weldon’s vehicle sustained $30,000 in damages, and Lopez-Maltos’s vehicle sustained $8000 in damages. Both the Utesch-Nemmers and the Weldon vehicles were considered totaled. A stop sign owned by the State of Iowa also received $1000 in damage.

Utesch-Nemmers was charged with failure to yield upon left turn, fraudulent use of registration, and driving while license denied or revoked.

Along with the trooper writing the report, three other Iowa State Patrol troopers, the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office, Sioux Center Police, Orange City EMS and Sioux Center EMS, Maurice and Sioux Center Fire Departments, Sioux County EMA, the Iowa DOT, C & H Towing, and Stockton Towing all assisted with the response to the accident.
