Perkins, Iowa — Hull emergency personnel responded to two accidents within a half hour of each other — one mile apart on Wednesday, November 20th.
The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about 8:30 a.m., 23-year-old Iris Mendoza of Sheldon was driving a 2002 Jeep Liberty southbound on Highway 75 at Perkins Corner, two miles west of Hull. They tell us 65-year-old Kelly Kots of Ireton was driving a 2023 Honda CRV Sport northbound on Highway 75.
The investigation indicates Mendoza lost control of the Jeep, crossed into the northbound lane, and struck the Kots Honda.
Kots and Mendoza were both transported by Hull Ambulance to Sioux Center Health.
The Jeep sustained about $7,000 in damage; the Honda sustained about $35,000 in damage;
Mendoza was cited for failure to provide proof of financial liability and failure to maintain control of a motor vehicle.
The sheriff’s office says the Hull Fire Department, Hull Ambulance Squad, the Iowa State Patrol, and the Sioux Center Police Department assisted with the response to the accident.
The other accident happened earlier in the hour, a mile north of Perkins Corner, at the north junction of Highways 18 and 75. A vehicle southbound on 75, attempting a turn onto westbound Highway 18 could not stop due to icy and snowy conditions on the road, and slid into a truck that was stopped at the stop sign. No injuries were reported in that accident, according to the Iowa State Patrol.
Sioux County Sheriff Jamie Van Voorst confirms that while the accidents happened at nearly the same time and only a mile apart, they were not connected in any way.
