Sanborn, Iowa — A Sanborn woman and a Coal Valley, Illinois man were taken to hospitals after an accident near Sanborn.
The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reports that about 6:25 PM on Thursday, August 27, 2015, 39-year-old Nikki Elgersma of Sanborn was driving a 2006 Chevy westbound on Highway 18, two miles east of Sanborn. They say 54-year-old Troy Williamson of Coal Valley, Illinois was eastbound on 18 driving a 2010 Kenworth semi.
The report says that Williamson and witnesses reported that Elgersma’s Chevy crossed the centerline and went completely over the opposite lane of travel. Williamson says that he drove onto the shoulder but the Elgersma vehicle kept coming at him. The deputy’s report also says that Williamson mentioned that Elgersma allegedly appeared to be reaching for something on the floorboard or passenger seat when the vehicles collided.
Elgersma’s SUV rolled and stopped on its top in the south ditch.
The Sanborn Ambulance took Elgersma to Baum Harmon Mercy hospital in Primghar. The Hartley Ambulance took Williamson to Spencer Hospital.
Elgersma’s Chevy sustained about $7000 in damages, which was enough to total the vehicle. The Kenworth semi that Williamson was driving sustained $20,000 in damages.
Elgersma was charged with failure to maintain control.
