Woman Taken To Hospital After Fiery Osceola County Crash

Osceola County, Iowa — One person was taken to the hospital as the result of a fiery two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Highways 9 and 60 in Osceola County early Tuesday evening.

According to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, the mishap occurred shortly after 6:30 Tuesday evening when a 2015 GMC Terrain, driven by 63-year-old Kathleen Marie Van Marel of Orange City was southbound on the off ramp going toward Highway 9 and reportedly failed to stop, colliding with a 2007 Honda Odyssey, which was being driven eastbound on Highway 9 by 36-year-old Pedro Castro Morales, of Worthington.

Castro Morales reportedly swerved, but was unable to avoid the collision. Deputies say Van Marel told them she failed to stop because she thought she had the right-of-way back to Highway 60.

Van Marel’s Terrain came to rest in the east ditch and the Castro Morales’ Odyssey came to rest south of Hwy 9 on the southbound entrance ramp.  All occupants were out of the Odyssey when it became in engulfed in flames, according to authorities.

VanMarel and Castro Morales were not injured.  A female passenger of Castro Morales was transported to the Osceola Regional Health Center with minor injuries.

The Terrain received approximately $10,000 in damage and the Odyssey received approximately $30,000 in damage.

Deputies say VanMarel was issued a citation for Failure to Obey Stop Sign and Yield Right of Way.

The Sibley Fire Department assisted at the scene.
