50-60 Cornstalk Bales Go Up In Smoke In Overnight Fire

Sioux Center, Iowa — Fifty to sixty round cornstalk bales were destroyed in a fire early on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, near Sioux Center.

According to Sioux Center Fire Chief David Van Holland, at about 3:15 a.m., the Sioux Center Fire Department was called to the report of a cornstalk bale fire at 4227 Harrison Avenue. From the south end of Sioux Center at Sioux Feed, that’s east for a mile and then a litle south.

The chief says the fire department saw lots of flames from round bales and tires burning as they approached the scene. He says they took the bales out into a nearby field, pulled them apart and doused them with water. The tires, they just pulled apart and doused on the yard, says Van Holland.

He says no injuries were reported to people, pets, or livestock.

The fire department was assisted by the Ireton, Maurice, and Orange City fire departments.

He says the cause of the fire is undetermined.

Chief Van Holland reports that damage was limited to the bales and the tires. At today’s prices, that’s roughly about $3000 in value.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about two and a half hours.
