Sibley, Iowa — The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a car fire that happened early on Thursday north of Sibley.
According to Sibley Fire Chief Ken Huls, the fire department was called to the scene of a car fire at 120th Street and Highway 60 northbound, in the 1:00 a.m. hour. That’s about two miles south of the state line. He says when they got there, they found a vehicle totally engulfed in flame. He says it was pretty much destroyed when they got there.
According to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, 47-year-old Lynn Marie Peterson of Windom, MN was driving a 2006 Pontiac Vibe on Highway 60 northbound north of 120th Street. They say Peterson stated that she swerved due to a deer and ended up in the ditch. The deputy says that in an attempt to to drive the vehicle out of the ditch, the spinning tires may have gotten hot and possibly ignited the dry grass that was in the ditch, fully engulfing the vehicle in flames. The report says the vehicle received approximately $20,000 in damage.
It says Peterson was cited on a charge of Failure to Maintain Control.
Fire Chief Huls says the fire department used about a thousand gallons of water to fight the fire and crews were on-scene for 45-50 minutes.
