UPDATE: Doon Area Sees Multiple Car Accidents Due To Slick Roads Recently

Doon, Iowa — Multiple accidents happened near the town of Doon on Wednesday and Thursday morning due to slick road conditions, according to Lyon County Sheriff Stewart Vander Stoep.

A Canton man’s passenger was taken to a hospital after a crash in that area on Wednesday. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office reports that it happened in the 2400 block of 240th Street (A42), about a mile north and about four miles west of Doon.

They report that their investigation determined that 18-year-old Jason Koedam of Canton, SD, was driving a 2004 GMC Sierra westbound on 240th Street when road conditions caused him to lose control of the vehicle.

They tell us the vehicle entered the north ditch and overturned several times before coming to a rest on its wheels.

A passenger in the vehicle was transported to Hegg Memorial Hospital by private vehicle.

The GMC was considered a total loss.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Doon Rescue.

Just a mile east of that accident scene, on Thursday, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office says they responded to two separate one-vehicle rollover accidents, which happened in the 2400 block of K42/Elmwood Avenue.

In the first accident, 46-year-old Avidail Alebon Ramirez of Rock Valley was northbound on K42/Elmwood Avenue in a 1998 Toyota 4 runner. They report that the ice-covered roadway caused his vehicle to lose traction as he was traversing uphill. They tell us that after the vehicle lost traction, it slid sideways, crossed the southbound lane of travel, entered the west ditch and rolled one-half rotation coming to rest on it’s top. There were no injuries reported. The Toyota was a total loss. Alebon Ramirez was cited on a charge of failure to have a valid license.

In the second accident, which occurred at about the same time as the first accident, 33-year-old Nester Hernandez of Rock Valley was northbound in a 2005 Chevrolet Colorado. They say the ice-covered roadway caused his vehicle to lose traction as he was traversing uphill as well. They tell us that after the vehicle lost traction, it spun 180 degrees, entered the east ditch backward, and rolled one-quarter rotation coming to rest on the passenger side. There were no injuries reported in this accident either. The Sheriff’s Office reports that the Chevrolet Colorado sustained about $5,000 in damage. Hernandez was cited on charges of failure to have a valid license and failure to maintain control.

A vehicle driven by a Rock Valley man was damaged in a crash a half-mile south of Doon on 260th Street.

The Sheriff’s Office reports that about 4:55 a.m. on November 6, 2019, Cesar Omar Guardado Renteria was driving a 2003 Jeep Liberty northbound on 260th Street when slick road conditions caused Renteria to lose control.

They say the vehicle then struck the bridge railing causing it to spin in the roadway before striking the bridge railing on the opposite side of the road. The vehicle came to rest on its wheels in the west ditch.

The driver was not injured, but was cited on a charge of failure to maintain control. The vehicle was considered a total loss.

Lyon County Deputies were assisted on scene by Sioux County Deputies, Doon Fire/Rescue, and Trackside towing.
