Fire At Hull Electric Substation Extinguished Quickly

Hull, Iowa — It sounded much worse than it turned out to be, but the Hull Fire Department was called out to a fire at the electric substation on the south side of Hull on Monday, May 6, 2019.

According to Hull Fire Chief Greg Van Roekel, about 4:00 p.m., the Hull Fire Department was called to the report of a fire at the power substation across from the cheese plant near Hull.

The chief says the fire department saw as they approached the scene that it wasn’t the substation, but two electric poles that carry the electricity on fire. He says they used water to extinguish the fire.

Van Roekel says no injuries were reported and damage to the poles was minimal. He says the Rock Valley Fire Department was originally paged to help out, but they told dispatch that the Rock Valley firefighters didn’t need to respond.

He says a farmer in the area had been doing some burning and that’s what started the poles on fire.

He says the 12 firefighters who responded were on scene for about 20 minutes.
