Firefighters Put Out Two Fires On Monday

Northwest Iowa — Even with the spotty rain that we had, conditions remain dry, and fires can still grow quickly. That’s the message from area fire chiefs.

Primghar firefighters put out a fire on Monday evening, about 5:30 p.m. Fire Chief Gary Lansink says it was about a mile west of Primghar. Luckily, he says it turned out to be a fairly small fire, with only about 50 feet of ditch grass meeting a fiery end. He tells us the official cause of the fire is undetermined, but he says those on the scene of the fire did find a spent roman candle near the fire. According to Lansink, deputies had the fire mostly under control when firefighters arrived. He says they stomped it out and the firefighters finished the job with a hose and some water.

A few hours earlier, Rock Rapids firefighters were called to the report of a grass fire at 1555 Indian Avenue, about three miles west and a half a mile south on the Edna road — K60. Fire Chief Ed Reck says despite the burning ban in Lyon County, someone was burning some old tree logs and the fire got away from him and started burning the grove. He says they used some water and foam to put out the fire and also broke the log apart to get to the heat of the fire. Reck says that due to the burning ban, law enforcement officers had a talk with the individual, who said he was not aware of the burning ban.
