Ireton Woman Charged With Felony OWI After Car Ended Up In Ditch

Ireton, Iowa — An Ireton woman faces a felony charge after her vehicle was found in the ditch near Ireton on Thursday morning.

According to the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office, they were called to investigate a report of a vehicle in the ditch on Dove Avenue, a half mile west of Ireton on Thursday, July 14, at 6:35 a.m.

Deputies believe that 31-year-old Kate Holtrop of Ireton was driving a 2006 Saturn Vue southbound on Dove Avenue when she lost control of the vehicle, entered the west ditch, and re-entered onto Dove Avenue, lost control of the vehicle again, and entered the east ditch, where the vehicle became stuck. Responding deputies suspected that Holtrop was under the influence of alcohol. They also discovered a loaded shotgun in the vehicle.

The vehicle was not damaged.

The Ireton Ambulance took Holtrop to Hawarden Regional Health where she was treated and released.

Holtrop was then transported to the Sioux County Jail where she was charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated-third offense and carrying or transporting a dangerous weapon while intoxicated. Since she had been convicted of operating while intoxicated at least twice before, this time it was a felony offense.

The sheriff’s office reports that the Iowa State Patrol, Hawarden Police Department, Ireton Fire Department, and Ireton Ambulance Squad assisted them with the response to the incident.
