Spencer Teen Injured Near Sutherland

accident wordSutherland, Iowa — A Spencer teen was seriously injured in a single-vehicle rollover crash northeast of Sutherland late last week.

According to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, the accident involved a 2003 Dodge Dakota pickup, driven by 18-year old Cole Douglas Heikens, of Spencer.  Deputies say Heikens’ truck was westbound on B53, near Wilson Avenue, at a speed greater than the posted 45 mph speed limit, and went off the road onto the shoulder.  They say Heikens tried to bring the vehicle back onto the road, but over corrected, losing control, and rolling into the ditch.

Sutherland Ambulance transported Heikens to the Spencer Municipal Hospital with what are described as serious incapacitating injuries.

Heikens’ pickup sustained an estimated $10-thousand in damage.  Heikens was reportedly ticketed for Failure To Maintain Control.
