Sheldon, Iowa — A few Sheldon High School students exhibited expressions of dread Tuesday morning as a law enforcement officer approached their vehicles in the high school parking lot. The facial expressions changed, however, when they found out they had just been “caught” using their seat belts.
The Iowa State Patrol, along with the Sheldon Police Department, in cooperation with Triple-A, and Casey’s convenience stores, brought the “I Got Caught” campaign to Sheldon High School Tuesday morning. Law enforcement officers were approaching students’ cars as they parked, and if the student was buckled up, the officers rewarded them with a certificate for pizza and a soda.
Iowa State Patrol Trooper Vince Kurtz says it was nice to see a large percentage of the students arriving were, in fact, wearing their seat belts.
Kurtz says that, unfortunately, there were a handful of students who were not buckled up.
We asked Kurtz how many certificates were awarded at Sheldon High School Tuesday morning.
The “I Got Caught” campaign is designed to reward teens who wear their seat belts, and educate those who don’t about the reasons they should.
