Northwest Iowa — A lawsuit that could have enormous implications for farmers in our area, and across the country, is being argued in a California court.
The case is the first in a series of lawsuits filed against ag chemical giant Monsanto to come to trial, this one filed by a California man who is dying of cancer that, he says was caused by exposure to Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide.
DeWayne Johnson says Monsanto failed to sufficiently test, investigate, or study it’s Roundup products, and specifically, it’s active ingredient, glyphosate. Johnson also charged that Monsanto knew, or should have known, that exposure to glyphosate could result in cancer, and other severe illnesses or injuries.
Johnson’s suit says he was exposed to Roundup products while living on a commercial sod farm, without knowledge of it’s dangerous charcteristics.
Depending upon the outcome of this case, Monsanto could, potentially face thousands of other, similar cases from people who have used Roundup, and blame it for causing poor health conditions.
Monsanto is also the target of multiple Class Action lawsuits, blaming the company for many maladies they contend have been caused by exposure to Roundup and it’s active ingredient, glyphosate.
