Altena Retires; Van Voorst Takes Sheriff Reins

Orange City, Iowa — There’s a new sheriff in town. Literally.

Former Sioux County Sheriff Dan Altena has retired from the sheriff’s office to run for the Sioux County Board of Supervisors, and former Sheriff Captain Jamison “Jamie” Van Voorst is the new Sioux County Sheriff, effective this Thursday, September 1st, 2022.

We talked to Sheriff Van Voorst about it, and he says he is the “interim sheriff.”

Van Voorst says he’s the sheriff until someone takes office after the next sheriff election, which will probably be in November 2024. However, he says that citizens can force a special election if enough signatures are turned in within two weeks of his appointment to the position. Otherwise, he plans to run in the primary and if he wins that, the general election in 2024.

Sheriff Van Voorst tells us how he feels about being appointed to the position.

He tells us about his feelings for the future.

Van Voorst says he’s “blessed” to be able to step into the role the way things are at the sheriff’s office. He says he doesn’t anticipate a lot of changes.

Ironically, September 1st was Sheriff Van Voorst’s 28th anniversary with the Sheriff’s Office. Previously he worked for the Sioux Center Police Department. He’s a graduate of the Police Science program at Western Iowa Tech in Sioux City and is originally from Rock Valley. Van Voorst is married to Gwen and they have three adult children and five grandchildren, and they live on an acreage near Hull.
