Sheldon, Iowa — Planning on taking part in Sheldon’s Annual Cleanup? Do you have your flag yet?
Sheldon’s Annual Cleanup is coming up on Monday, September 19th. Virtual flags are being sold until Tuesday, September 13th. The clean-up week sign-up form can be found by clicking here. The form must be received in the clerk’s office or in the west side drop box by Tuesday, September 13th. Pick-up begins Monday, September 19. Items must not be placed curbside earlier than Friday evening, September 16, according to city officials.
There are several stipulations. Items have to be placed curbside by 7:00 a.m. Monday, September 19th. You are asked not to place anything curbside earlier than Friday evening, September 16th. They tell us that no items will be picked up in the alleys. After the city crew goes past your house, you will not be allowed to deposit more items.
Trees/brush and appliances/electronics may be picked up separately. You are asked to not place your items next to your regularly used recycle or garbage can. They tell us that metal, electronics & appliances will be picked up separately and must be on a separate pile. Tree branches or brush will be picked up separately and must be piled separately. The City says they will not pick up commercially cut trees and brush.
They remind us this is for residential homes only. Mobile homes & apartments may be picked up on an individual basis but must be pre-approved. No items will be picked up from businesses. And it’s one household per virtual flag.
Hazardous, toxic materials or liquids of any kind will not be picked up. State guidelines classify batteries, paint, thinner, stains, gas, oil, insecticides, pesticides, etc. as hazardous or toxic waste. They will not pick up tires or batteries, roofing or large piles of demolition material, garbage, grass trimmings or leaves, or concrete or brick.
Sheldon officials tell us that no containers will be left. They remind us that salvaging is part of the tradition, so we should not be surprised if items are gone after they are set out. They say this also helps the city. Again, they ask you to not use good garbage cans or recycling bins, as you will not get them back. For further information, call the City at 712-324-4651.
