Annual Sutherland Festival To Be Over Labor Day Weekend

Sutherland, Iowa — The annual Sutherland Labor Day Celebration is one of three happening this weekend in northwest Iowa. (The other two are Celebration Days in Sheldon and Big Sioux River Days in Hawarden).

At Sutherland, the fun gets underway on Saturday. They’ll start out with a breakfast at the community center, presented by Sutherland Legion members. There’s a 5K Run/Walk too. Doug Sweeney is one of the people setting up the celebration and he tells us what else is planned Saturday.

The meal on Saturday night is from 5 to 7. The Willoway Meal will feature free entertainment. And the movie “Aladdin” will be shown in the city park.

Then on Sunday, they’ll have a worship service in the park (and don’t forget your lawn chairs). There’s also a Salute Tractor Ride. Sweeney highlights some more activities for us.

The Sunday night meal from 4:30 to 7 is a ham and beef supper at Bethel Lutheran Church.

Labor Day Monday is the big day in Sutherland.

Creamed turkey and biscuits will be available at the Methodist Church. The Masonic Lodge will serve hot dogs and burgers in City Park. There will be pie and ice cream at the library. Games and bouncy gyms will be at the park too, as will pony rides. There will be vendors in the city park shelter house. A Saddle Club Fun Day and Horse Show will be available. Live music by R&R Line will be at the Johannsen Center. Kids races start at 2:30, and there will be free ice cream bars in the park at 3 p.m.
