Sheldon, Iowa — Sheldon Police have told KIWA about a new scam being perpetrated on people who have prepaid cell phones.
According to Sheldon officers, here’s how the scam is pulled off: Your prepaid cell phone rings, and your own cell phone number shows up on Caller ID. If you answer the call, you’ll hear a recorded message telling you that your cellular account has been suspended, and that you need to press “1” to speak with a representative. If you press “1” you’ll be asked for your private information, and cell phone password. Once getting your personal information it will then be used to order high-end cell phones, and have them charged to YOUR cell phone account, and delivered to the scammer.
Police say their best advice is, if you receive one of these calls, don’t answer it. If you do happen to pick up, just hang up when the recorded message starts.
